November Meetup – Project Management

It can be tempting to jump right into a web project—or any project— without establishing clear goals, requirements, necessary resources, and a plan. But good project management processes and practices are essential for completing projects successfully…

On November 15th, at 2:00PM, members of the ITS Project Management Office will present on PM best practices. The presentation is a good introduction to the topic and will also be applicable to those who have led or contributed to many projects. Kathy Kyzer and Amy Shoop are both PMP Certified (Project Management Professional) by the Project Management Institute and have guided several projects at the university — both big and small. They will be speaking on areas such as:

  • Overview – What is a project?
  • Addressing common challenges  – Resources, communications, change management, setting expectations, prioritization, and risk
  • Project phases and lifecycle
  • Obtaining project management templates such as project initiation documents, project plan, change requests and lessons learned
  • Methodologies (Waterfall, Agile, etc.)
  • Tools and tips

After the presentation, if time, we’ll consider how  a real-world example might be set up for success.  For example, let’s look at something like “E-mail newsletter project”– or your suggestion. How might this be organized and what are the questions to answer in terms of client/organization goals, resource needs and constraints, timeline factors, budget (or lack of) and so on.

Please pass this info on to any colleagues that you think would benefit from the presentation. 🙂

From Web design enthusiasts to Web evangelists, from newbies to gurus, all are welcomed attend the monthly meetings to listen, learn and share.

December 2011 – Decision-Making Using Web Analytics

Do you make website related decisions using analytics and usage data?   The December 1 Webmasters meeting will be about how analytics can help drive decision-making and help you understand more about your users.  This meeting will be aimed at a broad audience – no technical skills required.

Rachell Underhill at the Graduate School and Anita Crescenzi at the Health Sciences Library will share how they use data to drive decision-making (using Google Analytics).  Some questions they will address include:

  • What is the top used content?
  • What content should have more prominence on the site?
  • Which of two design alternatives has better usage?
  • What is the best time of day for website outages?
  • Which browser/operating systems/mobile devices should be supported?
  • Where are site visitors coming from?

If you use analytics or want to learn, come join us December 1 from 2-3:30pm in the Grad Student Center.  If you have questions, please feel free to contact Billy Hylton (billy_hylton@unc.edu), Rachell Underhill (runderhill@unc.edu) or Anita Crescenzi (amcc@email.unc.edu).
