September Meeting – MySQL/LAMP Support at UNC

One of the most popular meeting topic ideas has centered on campus options for MySQL support and other LAMP services. I imagine many of us are familiar with a scenario like the following: “I’m setting up a WordPress (or Drupal, Joomla, PHP-based web app, etc.) site and not sure who can provide database support.” Folks want to know what options are available on campus, off campus, and so on.

Let’s tackle this one for our September meeting.

Also, the university’s Chief Technology Officer, Michael Barker, may be joining us for the meeting. Mike can speak to where ITS is in terms of offering MySQL as a service and answer questions.

No presentation this time — more of a roundtable conversation. Bring your questions, ideas, and suggestions.

Time: 2:00p.m. – 3:00p.m.

Advanced Photoshop Training

Alicia Orth, from the Med School web team, will return for intermediate/advanced Photoshop training. Alicia is an excellent instructor and this a great opportunity to sharpen your Photoshop skills. Although the material will be more advanced than her previous session,  Photoshop beginners may find this a valuable class as well. Topics may include things like masks, “non-destructive” editing, and layer options. Download class guide (PDF)

Designing for the next 53 percent

I imagine many of you are aware of the work Fred Stutzman has been doing in the social media space. His research has been cited in local and international media including the NY Times Magazine, Salon.com, Wired, and NPR. Additionally, Fred is the co-founder of the identity management tool ClaimID. Now, he can add a Webmasters presentation to his long list of accomplishments. 😉

Stutzman will join us for the March meeting and present on the topic “Designing for the next 53 percent”.

According to the Pew Internet and American Life Foundation, 47 percent of online adults participate in social network sites. As social networking moves from a youth-centric phenomenon to being broadly adopted, users, designers and organizations are challenged to manage the complexities of networking at scale. Drawing on case studies and original research, this informal talk will address some of the challenges and opportunities that emerge as social networking is adopted by the next 53 percent.

Location: Grad Student Center
Date: Thursday, March 4
Time: 2:00p.m. – 3:00p.m.
