April Meetup – Daily Tar Heel

Sooner or later most of us will likely face the demanding undertaking of a major website redesign. To help you prepare for this the Webmasters group is providing an informal presentation and discussion focused on what all is involved in the redesign process.

Daniel Pshock, the webmaster of The Daily Tar Heel website (http://www.dailytarheel.com) and an integral part of the ~2-year long redesign project, will be walking us through their team’s process, design decisions, and insights the DTH picked up along the way. His talk will also include his experiences working with developers remotely, a bit on how the launch went, and what the plans are now that it’s live.  Following Daniel’s presentation there will be a chance for you all to ask questions and/or share how your own redesign process/experience relates (or doesn’t) with the DTH process.

Whether you are a ‘communicator’, design professional, web manager, or developer, you will find something of interest in this topic be that in the development and results, or in the design and decision making process. So, come join us on Thursday, April 24th at 2:00 PM!

Please note that this presentation will be held on a different day/time than our usual first Thursday. Details below:

Location:  Grad Student Center  (http://gradschool.unc.edu/student/gsc/)
Date: Thursday, April 24th
Time: 2:00P.M. – 3:30P.M

Sina Bahram to speak to UNC Webmasters Group on Accessibility during National Disability Awareness Month

Sina Bahram In recognition of National Disability Awareness Month, we’re bringing in a special guest for our October meetup: Sina Bahram. Sina is an accomplished “universal design” and accessibility evangelist who greatly contributed to the implementation of NC State’s web accessibility policy.  He also works with the Free Software Foundation, project GNU, on systemic accessibility matters such as the state of Linux accessibility, accessibility on the web, open source screen reader development, etc.  Most recently, Sina helped bring to fruition a project in the country of Nepal, whereby a school is being opened to teach English, technology skills, and the principles of free software to blind students.

His passion for this field originally stems from the fact that he is mostly blind and he uses assistive technologies such as a screen reader to navigate various computer systems and  devices. This is a great chance to see a screen reader in action (let’s see how a few of our UNC sites hold up!), learn about the latest thinking about web accessibility, and have your questions answered by an expert.  Sina is known for having an engaging, interactive style so we’re going to have some fun.

UX Summer Series

For July and August we’re going to take a look at concepts, methods, and strategies centered on user experience – sort of a UX summer series…

ABE CRYSTAL
Introduction to UX
Thursday, July 8, 2:00PM – 3:00PM

Some of you may know Abe from his work here at UNC and his involvement in Triangle usability/UX community. He co-founded the TriUPA group (http://triupa.org) and is a principal at the user experience consultancy MoreBetterLabs (http://www.morebetterlabs.com/). Abe is also an adjunct instructor at SILS. This will be a fairly high-level overview which will touch on things like  strategy (product planning, brainstorming), research (interviews, data analysis), and design (sketching, storyboarding, prototyping).

Note that this is the second Thursday in July.

November Meeting – “Designing Outside the Browser”

If you’re on the Refresh the Triangle email list, you may have received an email about a presentation next week on “Designing Outside the Browser.” I thought it looked interesting and contacted Richard Powell, the presenter, to see if he could do a similar presentation for our November meeting. He’s in.

Details (from Refresh site)

As designers, we’re constantly looking around for sources of inspiration and influence. Spending all day working on the web, it can be tempting to limit one’s gaze to other websites. While many of the challenges we face on the web are unique, in this talk, we’ll look beyond the browser window; at the techniques designers in other disciplines have used to solve their unique design problems and how we can apply those lessons to our own work on the web.”

Richard Powell is a freelance web designer working in Chapel Hill. Working solo and as a Terralien crew member, Rich has had the opportunity to design and build sites for saddle pad vendors and underwater photographers, acupuncturists and investment firms, software consultants and massage therapists. He enjoys the challenges of finding just the right arrangement of pixels and tags to fit each client. When the glow of the LCD becomes too much, he loves taking a quick break to play “Hullaballoo” with his wife and 2 year old daughter.

Date and Location:
Thursday, Nov 5 @ 2:00PM
211 W. Cameron (map – http://gradschool.unc.edu/student/gsc/)

If you can’t make it to the Webmasters meeting consider attending the Refresh the Triangle meeting next Thursday– sounds like a cool group. http://refreshthetriangle.org/posts/refresh_022_designing_outside_the_browser/
