About the Workshop

This is a full-day event. Coffee, drinks, and a full lunch will be provided.

This 1-day course is aimed at anyone (developers, user interface designers, usability engineers, information architects, graphic designers, software end-users and end-user managers, marketers, trainers, etc.) who has an interest in helping their organization achieve end user productivity (i.e., efficiency) through the design of software tools.

The purpose of this course is to help attendees learn:

  • How to define and measure user efficiency
  • Aspects of human cognition which impact user efficiency
  • How to know when efficiency should be a key usability goal
  • How to calculate the bottom-line benefit of increased user efficiency, and incorporate this in a cost-benefit analysis of applying usability engineering methods and techniques to achieve user efficiency in a software development project
  • How to define a set of users and tasks, and then formulate meaningful, objective and quantitative efficiency goals for them
  • The difference between motor, cognitive and perceptual efficiency
  • An extensive set of general design principles for achieving motor, cognitive and perceptual efficiency in software user interface design
  • How to apply general principles , specific requirements and efficiency goals to the design of a user interface in order to achieve maximum user efficiency
  • When and how to conduct efficiency heuristic evaluations to evaluate the efficiency of a user interface design
  • When and how to conduct keystroke level modeling to evaluate the efficiency of a user interface design
  • When and how to conduct efficiency studies to evaluate the efficiency of a user interface design
  • Other factors besides the user interface design that will impact user efficiency
